Tonic water is essentially carbonated water with quinine dissolved in it.
Tonic water dates back to the days of British hegemony of South Asia. The British troops were given quinine to fight against malaria. And, as the good chaps that they were, found that diluting it with water made a great additive for a gin and tonic (hence its popularity).
Modern tonic water contains very little quinine, not enough to fend off malaria. But, when lemon or lime flavoring is added, it is known as bitter lemon.
